Why did I get into Bitcoin?

The Bitcoin Question

Wherever I go I always ask if I can pay with Bitcoin and the answer usually is “no”. I understand that many people don’t want to know what Bitcoin is, but I really would love them to understand that it is something good for the long term.

From Call Center to Content Creator

Back in 2018 I was still working at a call center and had the idea to start a blog to write about financial education because I wanted to start diversifying my income. I was working in a call center and I had read one article online that a guy became a millionaire just by posting online, so I wanted to give it a try.

I had basic knowledge on creating websites because when younger, I had created several blogs using the google “Blogger” platform. I didn’t know where to purchase a domain nor did I have any idea about hosting.

Despite that, I decided to do some research and decided to buy my first domain: educacionfinanciera1994.net. I began in “blogger” and started modifying the templates with little to zero knowledge on HTML. Later, I created the facebook page and started sharing my blog posts in groups and my page started growing little by little.

A Deeper Dive into Digital Finance

In 2020 that domain had already expired and I was more knowledgeable about creating websites so I decided to get a new domain: educacionfinancierea.tips. I started using wordpress. So after some months of posting content about how to save money, how to create a budget and more things like that, I had heard a little about a crypto currency (many people will disagree with that term) that was becoming more and more popular, Bitcoin.

I did some research and started reading, watching videos and listening to podcasts about Bitcoin. I got to know about the main net, the mempool, Hot and Cold Wallets, self custody and all that involves Bitcoin.

So, I decided to create a section about Bitcoin on my blog and also with a coworker from the call center I worked before, we created the podcast “Café con sabor a éxito“, which you can still find on Spotify and YouTube.

The websites are already down, so you cannot find them anymore, nor the Facebook fanpage.

Bitcoin in El Salvador: A New Chapter

We had live sessions on Facebook and Youtube talking about news around Bitcoin, checking charts and so on. So I had some knowledge about it, but I didn’t got so much into it until 2021 when president Nayib Bukele announced Bitcoin as Legal Tender in El Salvador.

To be honest I was happy but at the same time I was skeptical because I knew that Bitcoin was not going to be very well received in the country because it requires some learning curve that not many people are willing to learn. Bitcoin goes beyond the term: Cryptocurrency or money.

For a country that 70% of the population didn’t have a bank account, Bitcoin was not going to be a solution for anything. Probably his plan was different, but the reality was what I had anticipated.

Finding My Place in the Bitcoin Community

So I got into bitcoin in 2019 but was not too involved until 2021. In 2024, I attended the Bitcoin Pizza Day celebration that was held by Mi Primer Bitcoin which is an NGO that provides free bitcoin education to salvadorans and people around the world.

I got to know many bitcoiners and more people that had come to live in El Salvador because of Bitcoin.

The experience was fantastic to see how both locals and foreigners were together for one single objective, enjoy and talk about Bitcoin.

My Core Motivation: Technology and Freedom

So the reason why I decided to get into Bitcoin relies on the need of finding new things. Not because I wanted to become rich or something like that nor I wanted to be recognized and say: Ohh! Look at me peasants! I am a bitcoiner (like many people I’ve known actually do and call themselves “bitcoiners”).

My true sentiment towards Bitcoin is because I love technology and I do believe that Bitcoin is the future. So much that governments have started to secure their funds in Bitcoin.

I also want to help more and more people to understand what bitcoin really is so they can decide whether to start using it or not. At the end Bitcoin is freedom, each of us decides what to do.

A Different Perspective

So, that’s my story on how and why I got involved into Bitcoin. It was not as fancy or as magical as some people’s stories on the internet, but definitely it allowed me to see things from a different perspective. How about you?
