Can I get by in El Salvador just speaking English?

Short answer: Yes, you can. Ok that’s it! See you in the next blog post. Haha! Let me give you more information about it because you may have other questions and would like to know more about that.

Definitely you can get by in El Salvador without speaking Spanish but just to some extent because it all depends on the reason you visit my country.

You may have already watched several TikToks or Reels from different content creators about their experiences in El Salvador and you may be interested in coming to visit just for fun or maybe to do some business here.

Content Creators You Should Know

There are many content creators, both local and foreigners and I can recommend Chelo Abbe who is a Latino Travel Content Creator from the USA. All his content is in English and has many videos about El Salvador and his experiences here and through many other countries too.

Then if you want to have some local content creators, you may need to know some Spanish to fully enjoy the videos, but I can recommend Tío Frank, who is a Salvadoran Travel Youtuber and his content is always about hidden gems in El Salvador to visit.

What to Expect from El Salvador

Recently my country has experienced several changes and up to now, is still going through many more. I am excited to see where El Salvador is going, but at the same time I am afraid that some people may not be able to fully understand it all.

What I mean by that is that one of the first things that I want to make clear is that El Salvador is not a First World country yet, so don’t expect big cities like in the US or Canada nor big skyscrapers or a “Concrete Jungle”.

El Salvador is a small country that has a total area of 21,041 square kilometers, hence the nickname “Pulgarcito de América,” which translates to “The Little Thumb of America”. One of the advantages of visiting El Salvador is that you may be in the city in the morning, have some lunch at a volcano and then have dinner at the beach, all in the same day. You can explore and discover many beautiful things here.

Language: Spanish Is Everywhere, But English Helps

We speak Spanish, we have our own slang words like “Chivo” (great). If you stay in San Salvador, you’ll find that English is a very common language here too. However, still the vast majority of the population only speaks Spanish.

Renowned businesses may have employees that know some English or fluent English, it all depends on the area where you go because in the areas of Colonia Escalón or Zona Rosa, you may find stores, restaurants and other places that do have employees that speak English.

If you go outside San Salvador, you may find that people may understand a thing or two of English. That’s why we appreciate the people who take the time to learn some Spanish to make things easier for both.

This doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to fully live all the experiences if you don’t speak English because there might be someone who will help you get this around. Wherever you go, if a Salvadoran who speaks English sees a foreigner struggling because of the language barrier, we help out.

Tourist Areas and Activities with English Support

Areas like El Zonte or El Tunco are more touristic places and are more familiar with foreigners, therefore the communication is easier. Of course, in the majority of places where there are activities like: Hiking, Ziplining, extreme sports or some other similar activities, the majority of the guides do speak English.

Recently I went hiking with the Gold Born of Fire team to “Chorros de La Calera” or “Las Siete Cascadas” (Seven Waterfalls) which is a hiking route where you are taken through literally seven waterfalls and you have to climb one. It was a great adventure and the guide spoke fluent English. He said that has done the same trip back and forth 6 days a week, for almost 7 years, so he is really well experienced on that.

Final Tip: Learn Some Basic Spanish

Wherever you go, may find a place that will call your attention and may find a person who speaks English, if not, then you may need to use the always reliable ChatGPT or Google Translator to communicate with people, but then again, to avoid that, you can always learn some basic spanish phrases to help you get around.

Whether you come for fun, for business or any other reason, you may feel welcomed and safe. We will help you to get around and make sure your experience is pleasant. So, Welcome to El Salvador.
